Who doesn’t love the local fair? The rides, the food, the games. For children, a trip to the county or state fair is an experience they will remember forever. They get to pet farm animals, enjoy the amusements along the Midway and eat tasty treats. While consuming corn dogs or getting a lift on the Ferris Wheel is a lot of fun, it’s also wise to be careful. You don’t want your day cut short by taking a trip to the local emergency room or immediate care center. Here are a few fair safety tips from the Lima Street Church of God: Stay hydrated. Temperatures can get hot during fairs. You also may walk a greater distance than your normal day. Soft drinks don’t replenish fluids lost while touring the grounds or sitting in a hot area. You should drink plenty of water. Wear closed-toe shoes. You will be walking in areas where animals also roam. You also will be stepping onto cords and parts of rides and along stoned pathways. Avoid wearing flip-flops or sandals to protect your feet. Wash your hands after petting animals. Fairs often feature farm animals being shown for competition or petting zoos for children to visit. While 4-Hers and fair organizers keep these animals well-groomed, cows, pigs and goats still could have germs that are harmful if ingested. Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water and use hand sanitizers after petting them – especially before eating. Be careful how much you consume. Those deep-fried Oreos look and taste good. Having one may not cause any digestive or health issues. But if you over-indulge on fried foods or sweets (and then ride the Tilt-O-Whirl), you could have a problem. Limit your indulgence accordingly. Watch your children. Young ones are mesmerized by the bright lights of a fair. Remember, though, there are lots of moving equipment and people. Keep your kids close and hold their hands if they are very young. They could easily go where they shouldn’t and be in danger. Have a separation plan. Getting lost at the fair can happen, especially if the crowds are large. Talk to your children about staying put if they get lost. Tell them to look for a police officer or fair official if they get separated from you. Children should carry their parents’ names and cell phone numbers in their pocket. Follow the ride rules. By law, ride operators are supposed to post rules and instructions for rides. You should read them and review with your children. If they provide safety equipment, use it. If a ride temporarily stops because of a mechanical issue, stay seated and wait for instructions. Report anything that doesn’t look right. If you notice a maintenance issue or an operator not following procedures, report it to a fair official or police officer. Also, if you notice people causing problems, report them instead of trying to handle the situation yourself. Know where to find help. Fair organizers provide maps of their grounds and have signage throughout the area. Before you go or when you first get there, know where to get help in case of an emergency (first aid station, fair office or police stand). Enjoy your time at the fair!

The culture your teen must face today is often hostile to God’s values. Too many teens are simply sucked into the culture, losing their virtue in the process. But with your help, your teen can counteract the culture and live the life God wants for them. Here are some ways you can raise a godly child in an ungodly world: • Prepare for battle. Don’t sit back and allow your child to be persuaded by the culture’s current popular thinking by default. Model a life of faith in action for them, and regularly discuss biblical principles together. • Monitor outside influences. Know who your child's friends are and what values they embrace. Help eliminate negative influences and build a peer group of strong, godly friends. • Help instill courage over conformity. Teach how to be in the world without being of the world. Explain that God set up moral absolutes of right and wrong so they don’t have to navigate the fuzzy values of the world. • Teach how to define true self worth. Explain that God’s formula is the only one that works: Their worth equals who they are in Jesus Christ. • Refute myths about the acceptability of sexual immorality with the truth. This one can be uncomfortable, but is vital. You should be the primary source of information about sexuality and moral values. • Encourage modest dress. This isn't just for girls. It is scientifically proven that how we dress effects our thoughts and actions. Dressing modestly is an important way to honor God with the body He has provided.

Come join us as we look into God's word and lift our prayers to our gracious and merciful God, who truly cares for His children! "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." - Philippians 4:6-7

When the dust settles and all is said and done, when you look back on your accomplishments in life, your family will be one of the most important things you had a part in. Sure, you can look at a successful career. Sure, you can look at other accomplishments. But your children who carry on your name and your family legacy into the next generation – and into the next one – will be some of the greatest accomplishments of your life. How important it is for parents to realize their children are a gift to them from God. Psalm 127 says, “Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him. Children born to a young man are like arrows in a warrior’s hands. How joyful is the man whose quiver is full of them! He will not be put to shame when he confronts his accusers at the city gates” (verses 3–5 NLT). Your kids need you – not just in the early years but throughout their years at home. You’re impacting them. They need an on-hand mom and the active involvement of a father. Once it’s over, it’s over. We can’t regain that time again. We can’t go back and fix things. That is why parents should take the time now to do everything they can to impact their children. Establish parameters for them. Give them discipline. They need parental leadership. They may resist it at the time, but they will be grateful for it later. Some things are taught, and some things are caught. Some things are given by instruction, and other things are caught by example. Children will observe their parents. They want to know what their priorities are and what is important to them. It isn’t teaching children through rigid, unbending dogmatism but through explanation and example. That starts in a parent’s own relationship with God. Are you setting an example? Do you need to make some changes in your life so you can be an effective example and leader? It shouldn’t be our goal, however, to mold our children into our image. Our goal instead should be to mold them into God’s image. They are not ours to keep; they are ours to nurture. We are not to teach them to be dependent on us for the rest of their lives. Rather, we’re to teach them to be independent – and more importantly, dependent on God.

We are extremely excited about the opportunity to be present at one of Findlay's most active events...The Hancock County Fair! We will be in the Merchant Building reading the Wordless Book Story, handing out balloons and painting faces! Be sure to stop by and say hello and spend a few minutes listening to the amazing story of God's love! We'll see you at the Fair!

Teen Topics The Call to be Different The Issue: As we look at our society, we learn a lot about our modern culture. There are various expectations placed on us, and even pressure to fit into the mold of society. Sadly, many attitudes, perspectives and behaviors do not match that which God would desire us to have. Let’s see what Scriptures says about the call to be different. What does the Bible say? Look at Numbers 14 (Israel approaching the Promised Land): ❗️ How did Joshua and Caleb’s perspective of their situation cause them to stand out (vv. 1-9)? Joshua and Caleb trusted God and were committed to Him, whereas the people were afraid. ❗️ What did the Israelites think of Joshua and Caleb? (v. 10) They did not like the fact they were different. They hated them. ❗️ Note v. 30 - Only Joshua and Caleb received the blessing. ❗️ What does v. 24 say was so different about Caleb that set him apart from the other people? He had a different spirit and his heart was set on following God completely. What do these verses say is the goal of being different? ❗️ Rom. 12:1-2 – Don’t conform to the world, but be transformed. ❗️ Matt. 5:10-16 – Let your light shine so others may glorify God. ❗️ Rom. 8:29 – Our goal = be conformed into the image of Christ. What should I do? As followers of Jesus Christ, we are not called to look or act “weird.” But we are called to rise above the norm and live a life that glorifies Christ. Others may not like it, or even understand it, but when we are determined to live our lives for God,we will be different! In what ways should this calling play out in your life? In what ways should people see Christ in you?

As Christian Parents we often ask ourselves: How can some children hear the good news of the Bible and believe, while others hear the same message and remain unaffected? While the process of faith may be miraculous, it is not entirely mysterious. Jesus explained it in His parable of the sower (Matthew 13:1-23). Teaching received without understanding kills the yield. Faith with shallow roots withers and dies. Distractions, worries and desires for other things choke the Word. But one who hears the Word and understands it bears fruit. How can we help our children receive the Word and bear fruit? Jesus’ parable inspires several practical tips for planting the seed of faith in fruitful soil. 1. Focus on understanding. Its about more than just the facts. Planting seeds of faith that will take root requires the kids to truly understand the meaning of the facts. Sunday school worksheets often use fill-in-the-blanks and word puzzles to drill children on their factual knowledge. But unscrambling the word forgiveness in a puzzle is far less important than understanding the meaning of forgiveness. Hearing is not enough. Reading is not enough. Memorizing is not enough — unless your goal is to produce a Bible “Jeopardy” champion. Concentrate your time on helping kids really understand God’s Word, its relevance today and how you apply it. 2. Let them experience the message. People remember and are affected by vivid experiences. When Jesus wanted His disciples to learn about servanthood, He got down on His knees and washed their feet. You can be sure those disciples never forgot that faith lesson! You can do the same with your children. For example, to help them experience the concept of grace, involve your family in giving to others without expecting anything in return. Or to encourage kind words as mentioned in Ephesians 4:29, invite family members to write or draw a kind note to one another. Typically, when your kids are enveloped in emotion-packed situations, they are the most ready to grow. When circumstances provoke feelings of fear, sadness, anger, exhilaration, awe or wonder, be prepared to help them see how God is working. When Johnny is scared may be the opportune time to teach about God’s presence. Jesus took advantage of teachable moments often, such as during the storm on the lake and with those who threatened to stone the adulterous woman. 4. Reinforce for long-term retention. Some information we quickly forget. Other things we remember a lifetime. We can help move more of God’s message into long-term memory through “interval reinforcement,” review or use of the message repeatedly over time. If the brain registers information just once, less than 10 percent of the message is likely to be remembered after 30 days. But if there are six exposures to the information over 30 days, 90 percent of the message is likely to be retained. If you want your kids to understand God as Creator, repeat the message frequently — when you drive through the mountains, when you witness a sunset, when you visit the zoo and when you marvel at the intricacy of the human body. 5. Employ delight. Your kids will learn more when they enjoy the process. Make learning about God fun! Some parents and teachers wince at this suggestion. Few people gain a love for anything that is marinated in drudgery. No one ever accused Jesus of being dull or boring. In fact, consider His first miracle: turning water into wine for the wedding at Cana. And remember how He told Peter to find cash for the temple tax — go catch a fish and pull a coin from its mouth. Delightful! So, make faith learning delightful. Jesus concludes His parable: “The one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown” (Matthew 13:23). What crop are you plotting with your kids?
